I need some help understanding customs. i have a business and i have been thinking of importing goods?

(i want to be importing wholesale electronics in bulk, mostly consumer from outside US. if i do it, what taxes do i incurr in importing them and is it a good idea?)

Answer :
I can’t tell you if its a good idea, as there would be several factors to consider, but you can determine the tax by finding the HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) Code that applies to the product you are buying.
You also have to make sure the companies you are buying from are not on US Customs’ import alert or denied parties list. If you are serious, you should talk to a customs broker.

Need opinions/input on starting my own consumer electronics business.?

(Now, I’m about to change my major to business in college. I was going to be an electrical engineer but I changed my mind because I don’t want to go through hell in math just to sit at an office for most of my work years. I realized I do love electronic gadgets: phones, pda’s, tv’s, computers.
Now I personally don’t know all the insides and how they work, I’m not an engineer, but I catch on to things really easy and am a perfect teacher to tell people how to use them. I love having them myself.
I want to start my own business and I know I have plenty of time to think, but I just need a rough idea of what type of service can make a lot of money dealing with these items. I definitely don’t want to SELL the items. Maybe open more of a consulting thing because I know a lot of people especially older don’t know how to fully use their devices.
I really love the idea behind Geek Squad, Phonedog, CNET… these types of companies that review and blog things. That would be an awesome type of job for me to open.
Its like a roller coaster. Sometimes I feel like this could just blow up and be an awesome success and I could travel all over opening a lot of offices, and sometimes I have a fear like, no body will pay for this stupid type of service.
Like I said I have plenty of time for this plan to expand, I just cant see myself ever working at an office job for some large corporation after I had this breakthrough idea. I’m 19 by the way. )
