What is Fraud?

November 30, 2009 | In: Law & Taxes

Although the legal definition of fraud may vary, it
is generally defined as “deliberate misrepresentation” or “deception” for personal gain. One of the most common types of fraud is defrauding people of money. Insurance fraud, security fraud, investment fraud, forgery, and embezzlement are just a few types of fraud which may constitute “criminal fraud.”

Many people become “telemarketing fraud” victims because they give their personal information to unknown callers. If someone calls requesting personal information – don’t give out your credit card or bank account numbers. In fact, unless you’ve initiated the call, just say, “I’m sorry I don’t do business by phone.”

Internet fraudis very prevalent in today’s online world. “Phishing” is one type of Internet scam which usually involves sending e-mails that pretend to be from a well-known source requesting personal information.

Although it is not easy to prove fraud, if you believe you’re a victim of fraud – you may want to consider consulting with a lawyer.
